Veterans Aid and Attendance: A Financial Lifeline for Assisted Living

For many families, paying for assisted living can be a major concern—but if you or your loved one is a U.S. military veteran (or the surviving spouse of one), you may be eligible for a little-known VA benefit that can help cover the cost: Aid and Attendance.

This benefit can make a meaningful difference in accessing the quality care and support your loved one deserves. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Veterans Aid and Attendance?

Aid and Attendance is a monthly payment added to the VA pension for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who require assistance with daily activities. These funds can be used to help pay for:

  • Assisted living facilities

  • In-home caregivers

  • Memory care communities

  • Other long-term care services

This tax-free benefit is paid directly to the veteran or their surviving spouse and can be a crucial financial resource when planning for senior care.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for Aid and Attendance, the applicant must meet all three of the following criteria:

1. Military Service Requirements

  • Must have served at least 90 days of active duty

  • At least one day during a recognized wartime period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, etc.)

  • Must have received an honorable or general discharge

2. Medical Need

The individual must require help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as:

  • Bathing

  • Dressing

  • Eating

  • Medication management

  • Personal hygiene (This is typically determined by a physician and documented in the application process.)

3. Financial Criteria

  • Income and assets must fall below VA-set limits (as of 2025, the net worth limit is $155,356, excluding the primary home and a car).

  • Monthly income is offset by qualifying care expenses, which often allows families with higher income levels to still qualify.

2025 Monthly Benefit Amounts

Eligible recipients may receive up to:

  • $2,727/month – Married veteran

  • $2,300/month – Single veteran

  • $1,478/month – Surviving spouse

These funds are paid directly to the veteran or surviving spouse and can be used to offset monthly assisted living costs.

How to Apply

Applying for Aid and Attendance can be a complex process, but it’s worth it. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Gather Documentation

    • Military discharge papers (DD-214)

    • Medical records and physician statement

    • Financial statements (income, assets, expenses)

    • Proof of current care expenses (assisted living invoices, etc.)

  2. Complete the VA Forms Key forms include:

    • VA Form 21-2680 (Examination for Housebound or Aid and Attendance)

    • VA Form 21P-527EZ (Veterans) or 21P-534EZ (Surviving Spouse)

  3. Submit Through a Trusted ResourceYou can apply directly through the VA, or work with an accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO), elder law attorney, or local veterans organization for help.
